Word Formation: Coinage
·
Coinages
Coinage is the word formation process in which a new word is
created either deliberately or accidentally without using the other word
formation processes and often from seemingly nothing. For example, the
following list of words provides some common coinages found in everyday
English:
o
aspirin
o
escalator
o
heroin
o
band-aid
o
factoid
o
Frisbee
o
Google
o
kerosene
o
Kleenex
o
Laundromat
o
linoleum
o
muggle
o
nylon
o
psychedelic
o
quark
o
Xerox
o
zipper
Notice that many coinages start out as brand names for
everyday items such as Kleenex for a facial tissue. Coinages are also
referred to simply as neologisms, the word neologism meaning "new
word."
