Grammar Notes                                                                 Examples

1.      Phrasal verbs (also called two-word verbs) are made  up of a verb + particle.
    verb + particle
·         He put on his lab coat.

On, off, up, down, in, and out are common particles.
             verb + particle
·         She pointed out a problem.

Particles and preposition look the same. However, particles are part of the verb phrase, and they often change the meaning of the verb.

             verb + preposition
·         She’s looking up at the sky.
(She’s looking in the direction of the sky.)

                verb + particle
·         She’s looking up the word.
(She’s searching for the word in the dictionary.)

2.      USAGE NOTE: Many phrasal verbs and one-word verbs have similar meanings. Phrasal verbs are often less formal, and they are more common in everyday speech.

go on                  continue

wake up            awaken

3.      Phrasal verbs can be transitive or intransitive.
Transitive phrasal verbs have objects.

Most transitive phrasal verbs are separable.
This means that the object can come:

           ·         after the verb + particle

            or

           ·         between the verb and its particle

Ø                     Be careful! When the object is a pronoun, it must come between       the verb and the particle.
         phrasal verb   +   object
·         He set up an experiment.
                   phrasal verb   +   object
·         They figured out the problems.

           verb   +    particle   +   object
·         We dropped off the students.

or

                  verb        +     object      +    particle
·         We dropped the students off.
                                  object
·         We dropped them off.
NOT We dropped off them.

4.      Some phrasal verbs are intransitive.
Intransitive phrasal verbs do not have objects.
